V70 Tire Rub - Steering rack limiters V70-XC70 2001

I have a V70 T5 with the 17inch wheels. I keep having to return it to the shop to have the steering end stops adjusted to prevent the tires rubbing on the wheel arches. That solution lasts for a month at the most.

Volvo have offered to fix the problem by adding a limiter to the steering rack to prevent the wheels from turning too far. Has anyone had this done? If so what is the effect on turning radius? I'm fed up with the grinding noise, but don't want to start backing up every time I go round a traffic circle!

    V70 Tire Rub - Steering rack limiters V70-XC70 2001

I live in Singapore and have a 2001 V70. Had a problem with the original 16-inch wheels rubbing the wheel arches. The Volvo engineer stationed at the dealer told me "Volvo's are mass-produced cars and are subject to manufacturing variances." Guess this is the polite way to say that quality is not so good at Volvo. I had to pay to have S80 wheel stops installed. In Singapore, the new car warranty does not cover a) any part subject to vibration and b) manufacturing variances.

Take a look at the S80 wheel stops, the roller is bigger than the original V70's. You lose some turning radius but the wheels stop rubbing against the arches.

    Good luck. Andrew.

Well, people have done the limiters - over past 3 yrs I saw comments on this board - nobody was happy with turning diameter after they done that (neither before that though ;-) ). It usually had gone from so-so 39ft to ugly 43-45ft.

Me too, V70'01 17" amaltheas. Amazingly my original set of Pirelli P6's didn't rub at all ! That joy lasted for 20K until they went bald and I bought Yokohamas and instantly shared the pain. But... what you gonna do, limiters are worse. After all, wheel wells are plastic - no rusting consequences, only sound... just relax. ;-)

V70 Tire Rub - Steering rack limiters, Toyos? V70-XC70 2001

Same here, 01 T5. Though, the baldinies Pirellis that were on when I bought the car right before the winter did rub a bit. I then quickly change for winter on steels. I though I was just imaginating this rubbing.
Being use the the amazing turn radius of the RWD, I wouldnt even think of limiting more the lame turn ratio on this car.
However, you mention no rubbing with original Pirellis. Could it be that I was experiencing this rubbing because the suspension dropped with ages?
Anyway, winter is almost over, I ordered the new Toyo Proxes 4, apparently incredible judging from a review, will see how they rub. I will post then my honest appreciation. Doesnt seens that Toyos are a popular brand on the board, Yoko seems to be the word.

Honestly - dunno. May be. It's my first Volvo and first new car in my life - I'm youngster. ;-) The rub marks I'm getting from Yokohamas are somewhat high on the wheel wells so I'd say yes, it can be in part because of suspension aging.

Well, I didn't spend much time choosing. If I did, it probably would have been different brand but... we moved from Miami Beach (read: excellent roads) to NoVa in March (read: pothole season) and in our second week here my wife caught some awesome potholes that caused HUGE blisters on sidewalls of already balding Pirellis ready to go off. So we went for Sears (the only place that was open Saturday afternoon in this otherwise bearable area ;-) ) and took the best they had in 235/45-17 size. But honestly if I knew I'll need to move to NoVa at the time, I would have NEVER gone for 17 inches. I probably wouldn't have bought Volvo either... ;-)
