Rough idle at startup S70

Hello All

My 98 S70 (117,000 miles) non turbo sometimes idles rough and I can smell the excess fuel as well.

This only happens when I run the car, park it and then start it for a couple of seconds (pulling in or out of the garage) and then leave it sit for the night. Everytime i start the car the following morning, I can tell by the engine rev and smell that there is something not right...

I took it to my volvo dealer who saw the problem and "diagnosed" it to be a bad vacum hose, but the problem pesisted. Then i took it to a private Volvo mechanice who perfomed the tune up and told me the old plugs were not the oe specs for my volvo!!! However, the problem still continues.

This is more of an annoyance problem, only happens when i run the car for a couple of seconds, and when this does happens i can let the car run for a couple of minutes, the excess gas??? burns off and the car rides great!!!!

Do I have a bad o2 sensor or mass air flow sensor????

Any and all suggestions are appreciated!!!!

You should not start your car for short periods. The catalytic converter does not have time to heat up. The smell you’re picking up is probably unburned fuel fuming out the exhaust pipe. This could have damaged the cat. For now just let your car warm up properly and if you ever feel a loss of power the first thing to check is the cat.

    Your problem is........................ S70

not letting it run OR drive it long enough for the computers/sensors to get together. My wifes Passat would do this every time my wife wanted to pull it out of the garage from a cold start........back it out 30 feet then shut it off!
Upon a restart later it would miss and sometimes it wouldn't even start!!! VW basically told us what I mentioned above! If ya gotta move the car for any reason, let it idle for about 1 minute before shutting it off.

Is it the original battery ?
I had that same problem when I was not using the car for more than 2 days.
The problem was fixed right after I change the battery.
    I have a 1999 S70.

the gas smell at starup could be a bad purge canister or a cracked hose at the canister. Chech them carefully.
