Engine blow-by on 850T 850 1995

I understand that turbos do not have a flame trap, but, have an oil trap or oil separator. According to Haynes, you have to remove the intack manifold to replace the oil separator.

Has anyone had success flushing their engine with gunk prior to an oil change to clear potential blockage (oil trap) in lieu of replacing the oil trap?

Any other common causes for sudden engine blow-by coming from the oil cap?

Could it be as simple as replacing your cap gasket ?

      Lee,

Thanks for the oil cap gasket advice. It seems to have solved the blow-by problem. Now if I could just find the cause of the oil leak and consumption issue I'm still having.

    Hi

I have never had luck cleaning the oil seperater's on other Volvo's and I am not sure that an engine flush would clean the oil seperater anyway.

Get a new one and try repalcing it or get a mech to do it. Have compression checked as well this would reveal any potential problems.

Having spoken to a turbo specialist, he advised very strongly against flushing the engine with any form of detergent or adding any kind of additive to standard oils. The reason is the tight tolerances on a turbo, any foreign object can cause blockages, and oil additives close up the tolerances. As for the oil separator, I took mine off my 1996 R, flushed the separator, and also cleaned the connection down by the turbo where the separator feeds the fumes back into the inlet, and no more excess pressure problems. The bigger problem on my car was not the separator, it was the other end by the turbo intake.
