850 idle speed 850 1996

How can I lower the idle speed on a '96 850?
It is at 1000 rpm and i think it should be 800 rpm.
Concern is for the trans in stop and go commuting traffic.
Thanks,
S'V'

Yes I would look at cleaning the throttle plate butterfly and surrounding area as well as the idle control motor. If you have access to some Amsoil PowerFoam that is the best stuff to clean it with but if not I would recommend some Berryman's ChemTool spray, available at any WalMart or most other autoparts stores. Then after a good cleaning it should come back down to specs. Other than that I would look for a vacuum leak. The throttle plate should be cleaned at least once a year. Good luck .....

the idle speed is controlled by the ECU, thus is not adjustable.

Cleaning the throttle body and the idle air control valve should help if the idle is erratic, and you have not done it recently.

The idle is not erratic. The car runs perfectly at 140K miles.
Another person suggested the a/c is on via the defroster.
Maybe, but the idle is always at 1000 rpm and never is lower.
Maybe the switch that tells the computer that the A/C is on is stuck in the on position?
Any idea where that sensor or switch is located?
      Thanks,
      S'V'
