No headlights, no turn signals, no dash lights and ABS light is on. 850

Yo,
I own a 1995 850 GLT Wagon, 5 spd, 150 K miles. Bought it about 6 months ago. Occasionally when I start it the ABS light will come on. If I restart it, the light will generally go away.
However, sometimes when you start the vehicle, you have no headlights, no turn signals, no dash lights, or even tail lights. Very unsafe at night. Restarting the vehicle does not always fix the problems. The engine runs, the radio and heater fan work, the emergency flashers will work. The headlights will go on only if you pull back on the stalk. Any ideas? Thanks... David

Ditto the other responses. This is a classic case of a failed electrical section of the ignition switch. The repair is not hard.

To the person who noted that he can fix his by wiggling the key ... that will work for awhile, but eventually will not. Your switch is almost certainly bad as well.

    John

    Hi Davidschoe,
After the car is started, turn the ignition key back just a little bit, not enough to shut the car off, see if then everything works. My '95 855 does this occasionally.

Based on the description matching a description at Bay 13's web site
it sounds like the ignition switch is having problems. See:

    http://volvospeed.com/Repair/ignit_switch.htm

Note that the page was not working for me. Google has it cached
(somehow they cache half the internet). Go to google.com and enter
    this as the search:

    "ignition switch ignit_switch.htm"

and pick on the Cached link to get Googles cached version of Bay 13s
page on the electrical switch repair.

Here is some info from that page:

This posting covers the replacement of the electrical portion of the ignition switch on the 850, however the same procedures apply to the S/V/70. Reasons for replacing the switch include; ABS/TRACS light staying on but upon wiggling the key will go out, headlights with intermittent operation, especially over bumps, difficulty getting out of park at times and wiggling the key helps, seat belt lights not going out.
