Cooling System Question S70

So I am planning on replacing the thermostat because the engine is slow to heat up - at least the gauge says so.

After a moderately lengthy drive, with the gauge staying below the 50% mark... the fan stays running after the car is turned off.

I believe I have a thermostat problem. Engine is slow to heat up and interior heater air blows mild.

But if the engine doesn't get up to temp, why is that fan ever kicking on and why does it stay on after? I'm assuming that the temp switch for the fan is getting the "oooh it's too hot in here" signal and keeping the fan on...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

no explanation for the contradictory behavior, but what you've described is exactly what I experienced, and a t-stat was the fix.

      Thank you for your info.

I changed the thermostat yesterday and it seemed to help the temp problem. I still have a check engine light on. Does that go away by itself after some driving or do I get it reset by someone?

It cost me $20 to replace the t-stat. I now own a T40 torx bit and a long T40 allen-wrench (part of a set with handle). If anyone knows of a good place to get a 7" long T40 bit, let me know. Also needed is a 6mm allen wrench and a funnel (plus plastic container to catch the fluid). It took about 20-30 min. and was the cleanest tstat replacement I've done.

      Thanks!

Now hoepfully the light will go out...

When there is a temp problem, the fan will run as a fail safe to protect the engine. Possibility of a temp sensor fault, but most common fault is thermostat stuck open. You can expect a check engine light to come on if you keep driving with bad t/stat.

While you were in there it would also be a good idea to change the ect sensor ($60). They wear out and look terrible after a few years. The fan running can even wear out your batt, so be careful.
