My car has a loud sound (bad bearing ?) from the power steering pump or alternator area. Moreover the return hose to the power steering pump is slightly wet from the clamp down to the metal hose near the bottom of the radiator. I checked the fluid level, it is ok.
Is the bearing of the power steering pump gone bad or something ? I had the aux. belt (longer version) replaced last Sunday. I only drove the car since Wednesday and the loud sound just started in the evening on the way from work to home.
Any suggestion is appreciated.

I just got a call from the dealer, they found the source of the noise. It is the AC compressor bearing causing the loud noise. The part and labor is about $700. I don't expect the compressor's bearing dying this soon.
Thanks for everybody's input and comments.

An automotive stethescope with a rod probe will do wonders for narrowing this type of noise down.

I did use one to try to find the source of the noise. It sound liked from the power steering pump. It was getting louder after I drove my car to dealer's parking lot tonight!!

does it get louder when you turn?
Did you change your belt tensioner at the same time as the serp belt.
Maybe its too tight?

I tried to turn the steering wheel to either fully left or right, the sound didn't get louder. I also tried the move the belt tensioner, it moved fine.
So, it may the the steering pump bearing ??

Mike,
I haven't tried to listen to the sound when I turned. I will do that tomorrow morning. I didn't change the belt tensioner when I change the serp. belt.
Too tight ? Do you mean that the tensioner is getting old such that it doesn't perform well and make the belt too tight ?
I want to make sure before I call the dealer tomorrow for a appointment to replace the pump or belt tensioner.
Thanks,
Ching-Ho Cheng

Hi
I had a sound from that area that I thought was the water pump, it was louder the higher I revved. It turned out to be the small idler-pulley on the serpentine belt tensioner.
On the 93 model I was able to take the tensioner off and replace just the idler pulley. The noise went away.
What kind of sound is it, moaning/graoning or whining?

I just drove my car to dealer tonight. The noise was sort of moaning/graoning. It got louder when I got to dealer's parking lot.
I hope that it is the idle pulley, not power steering pump. What a big difference in price.
Thanks,
