Looking for infor about remote programming for 01 V70 2.4T V70-XC70 2001

Hello all, I'm getting mixed messages about programming remotes. I bought my V70 last week and the remotes were missing. The NON-Volvo dealer I bought it from picked up a remote somewhere, but it was NOT programmed to the car. As far as I can tell, it is the right model remote. It has 9452456 as the top number on the back of it. I see some people saying you need another pin or serial number that comes with them in the package to program them. I know you can program up to three with the car so I have bought 2 more from EBAY with the same number on the back uner the auumption of all having the same matching number on the back. So today, I called the dealer 20 miles north of me and asked if they could program them. He told me "If you don't have the ID number (not written on the remote) that came with it, throw them away". Of course, in the next breath, he said he'd sell me a new one for $160 plus programming, and the 2nd one would be a bargain at $100 if bought at the same time. Somehow the thought of 2 remotes that probably cost less than $5 to make for $260 rubbed me the wrong way. Then, I called the other local dealer who is 20 miles south of me and he said "As long as it's the right model for that car and the numbers on the back match, we can program it" (at the normal shop rate for labor). It would probably take 15-20 minutes so maybe $30-50?

So, after that lengthy introduction, can any of you having experienced a 2nd hand remote programming tell me what your experience was? Also, anyone with a 2001 V70 2.4T can you tell me what the number on the back of your remote(s) is/are at the top (the next number under "VOLVO"). I don't want to make the appointment for programming them and have the dealer tell me I have the wrong remote.

Thanks in advance!

The 2001 is not done by PIN numbers that the dealer could look up, as you will find out without the piece of paper that comes with the remote, your remotes are useless.

your post should be a warning to others but in case they don't see the problem,

S80, 2001 V70 and on, XC90, S60 all need the little piece of paper that comes with the remote, those numbers have to be put into the computer when the software program asks for it.

Thanks for the info Rick. But it sure makes me wonder why/how the 2nd dealer I talked to today (a VERY posh Volvo dealership) said they could program them as long as the numbers on the back matched. Guess I'll take my remotes in and see if they can really make it happen or not. My thought was that when the remote button is depressed, it has to transmit it's code to the car. Whatever device they're using should be able to listen for and decipher that code and tell the car it's ok. I'll let everyone know after I go see the dealer who says he can do it.

Be prepaired for it not working, once a technician gets the job and not someone that talks on a phone, the story is going to change. But I can see it's worth a trip on your part for piece of mind.
