Replacing Timing Belt on newer S70.. S70

I just got a 98 S70GLT with 125K miles. I am almost positive that the timing belt was never replaced. The VIN numbers put me in the newer timing belt setup: late 98. My question is: Can I still do the job myself via Bay 13 instructions, or, as some other thread said, I can't and must leave it for the $350 plus pros? What are really the differences between the 850 and early S70 and later S70 regarding this? Thanks

An Update. Last night I opened the cover and found that the belt seemed to be quite new and in very good condition, at least, for a number of miles more. This morning, I talked with the original owner and he stated that Volvo at 85K had to replace the entire engine! No wonder the belt looked quite new! So, I now have a 40K engine. However, thanks to all replies. I'm keeping notes from them, Bay 13, and will be joining alldata.

The Volvo procedure is seplled out in a TSB. You can access
TSBs from www.alldatadiy.com. It will cost $25/year but is
probably worth it if you do much of the work yourself.

The TSBs also indicate when special tools are needed which is
always handy for determining if you can do it yourself.

What you need to do is find out if you have a manual or automatic tensioner, removing the cover is the best way to solve the mystery. If you have the manual tensioner, I'd recommend replacing it with the T-belt change out. If you have the manual tensioner and need help I have a few pics(of the manual tensioner) I can send you, the manual tensioner pics and the bay13 instructions should be all you need.

Replacing Timing Belt on newer S70.. S70

      Hi Rick,

I have 2 S70's, one '98 GLT and one '99 T5, where one has the hydraulic tensioner (the 98) and the other with the mechanical (the 99). I would very much appreciate it if you could post or forward on any info or pics on the mechanical tensioner replacement.

I did the 98 myself with a replacment hydraulic, no problems, about a year ago. I just bought the 99, and in the volvo tech manuals I saw it mentioned different adjustments to the tensioner based upon ambient temperature, but I was nervous about my understanding of it and just had the dealer do it. In the future though, I would prefer to do it myself. Is it much more of a hassle to use the mech? I seem to remember something about adjusting a pointer on the tensioner to fit to the left, middle, or right of an adjustment window on the tensioner itself?

      Thanks!
      Vos

If the turbo isn't in the way, then you can change it yourself. You also need to note the part number on the belt as this will determine which version is right for your car. You can see it once you have removed the top cover for the belt. If you can't find the procedure for replacement, let me know and I will explain.

thanks...if the procedure is from Bay 13, I have that. But if it's different, especially if it relates to the mechanical tensioner, I would like that very much! I've never done timing belts before, but have done a lot of maintenance work. I'm going to take the cover off tonight just to see what shape the belt is in, as well as part number. I'm assuming that that doesn't take much to do that! Also, isn't the turbo on the other side of engine?
