Why Castrol ???

Volvo (and BMW) currently suggest using Castrol. Volvo uses petroleum based and BMW uses synthetic based oils, but both companies use Castrol. What is this all about?

My humble opinion is that Castrol is OK in the petro market, but that Mobil 1 is a better synthetic than Castrol synthetic.

Do they suggest Castrol because it is good or do they somehow get a kickback?

If you're planning to use synthetic, I'd also prefer Mobil 1 or Amsoil over Castrol anyday. I use Amsoil myself but it doesn't come cheap, no doubt.

Why Castrol ???

I suspect Castrol was low bidder to various Ford divisions for suppling
lubricants (Castrols' web site says Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo and Aston
Martin, all under the Ford Premier brands). I believe Castrol is also
based in the UK and 3 of those brands have strong UK ties so there could
be a historical/regional tie-in.
