Gearbox oil specifications 400

Greetings to all.

It has become time to check my gearbox oil again, this time I am expecting to have to top up slightly due to a little leak from one of the driveshaft seals. It is a very small leak, but over time I expect I will need to add a little oil.

The volvo book says to use only gearbox fluid with "Volvo partnumbers" on it.

Do I have to buy volvo gearbox oil? As I have already got some unopened bottles of Castrol EP - 80 and Duckhams 80W GL-4, stored since a gearbox refill I did on a previous car.

Would these be of suitable quality for the car?

Thanks, and goodwill to all!

Take care,

Ziggy. Volvo 440GL 1.8i 185,000 miles

older owners manuals say gl-4, newer ones tell volvo part number. my opinion is, you may use that oil meeting gl-4 (not 5) standard. good luck! i am currently looking for oil to my 460 zf AT. some people have recommended Total AT-42. i will probably use it. checked oil manufacturers info too.
