The Volvo service department wants a fortune for a simple oil change.

Can the chain stores like Jiffy Lube change my oil without destroying my engine?

I wouldn't trust those chain stores because my friend took his Lexus ES300 to Speedy for oil change. The store didn't put the oil cap back and oil was everywhere. He found out after he got home and tried to fill up the windshield fluid. Otherwise, he wouldn't know about the oil cap incident.

I would do it myself, if possible.

Jiffy lube will not put the stock filter on your car, but an aftermarket model that will be smaller. They did this with my wifes car. I quit going there.

Find a good mechanic and have him do it.

Silver;

I take my 2000 S80 T6 to a mechanic I know about or a tire place I know about for oil changes in between my trips to the dealer for scheduled service every 7500 mi (always includes an oil change). I wouldn't take it to Jiffy Lube.

If I had a Toyota or a Chevy I would go to a fast oil change place but I would not go there with any European car. I occasionally go to a local indi who normally does not work on imports but he is a real mechanic that I have used in the past for my domestics. I have to let him know ahead of time so he can get the filter. I think he charges me about $30 because the filter is costlier and it takes more than 6 quarts of dino juice. I don't understand why you need "battery service" and brake inspection with every oil change. It also sounds like your dealer is bundling services. It's fine if you are due for the services but you should be able to get just the oil changed if that is all you want or need. After all, you are the customer and the one paying for it. Maybe you should make some noise about the services you do not want. Let them know that YOU control the checkbook. The thing about fast oil change places is those people are not real mechanics and they are always trying to sell additional services. The problem with that is, I have found, they don't always know how to put back together what they took apart. My brother took his Saab to one of those places and they were trying to sell air filters that day, so they took apart the air filter housing to gain access to the filter but they were unable to put it back together. Their solution? They were going to push the car out of the bay and leave my brother to his own devices. (My brother had other ideas about that!)

The local Volvo specialist shop charges $75 for regular service (every 5,000 miles) which includes:

- Change Engine Oil & Filter: $30
- Inspect Brake System: $28
- Service Battery: $17

This is their minimum service. The 100,000 mile service is almost $900!

I won't even go into what the dealer charges, but it's over $100.

Be nice if I could go someplace for just an oil and filter change.

At my Volvo dealer, an oil change is always $39.95 and it's posted. Services are costlier but they're doing more than an oil change then.

My Volvo dealer charges $55.00 for an oil change and filter. when I inquired to as what else they are doing to justify the high price, they said that they also check all the light bulbs, which explains to me why they are charging as much per hour as an electrician.! lol

Needless to say ,I change the oil and filter myself, My local Jiffy Lube doesn't have the Volvo cartridge style oil filters and I suppose I could bring that part with me to Jiffy Lube but I really don't feel comfortable with a $6.00 an hour grease monkey who is not familiar with Volvo's changing my oil.

[You will never leave where you are until you decide where you would rather be.]

Wonder what philosopher came up with that one?

If you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there makes more sense.

hmmm more to the question has the grease monkey HEARD of a torque wrench..let alone knows how to use one....

as to the prices what the hell do they do to a battery to charge $17 for servicing it??????

the more i have to do with cars in general the more i become convinced by and large (unless you can find a REALLY good and HONEST mechanic - which are a bout as common as rocking horse droppings!) DIY is the answer!

I agree...I have changed oil myself since an incident at Jiffy Lube. I took my then beater car, a '91 Chevy Corsica in for an oil change at Jiffy Lube over here in Whittier, CA. The guy working there told me that my oil pan threads were stripped, and then he had the nerve to refer me to his "buddy" who could drill a new hole for me and plug it back up. Anyway, I drove home to find that they had stripped the oil pan bolt. Luckily, I just bought a new bolt and things were fine since then. The bolt was stripped by them, but luckily not the pan, *sigh*. My friend's Toyota Camry oil pan was stripped by the dealer as well, but they replaced it free of charge. Long story short, if I was stuck working at a Jiffy Lube, I really wouldn't give a rat's about whose car I was working on. Fact of life. If you don't trust someone changing your oil, just do it yourself. And today I took my 850 in for alignment, and the guy topped off (overfilled) my oil free of charge!! My face dropped as he said that he topped it off, but hey, he meant well, so I just said "thanks" and drained it back to normal when I got home. Cheers!
