My Volvo gave me a nice birthday present. An ugly yellow ETS.

The good news is that ETS is going off after restart and performance
seems OK. But for how long?

Will cleaning the ETM buy me some time? Can any mastertechs supply
some things to try before going to the dealer?

Everytime I log on someone else is having the same problem. At 37K miles there is no way that should fail. I hope you may have some time left on your warranty. If you do, get it in there pronto.

Regardless, I am urging everyone who has had this problem (whether under warranty or not) to call and complain. This is a dangerous defect that can result in the car stalling on the highway, not accelerating, or surging. To market this as the safest vehicle you can buy is total farce.

Chances are good that the dealers Vadis PC will see codes saying "ETM, internal fault". Cleaning it, etc is just a waste of time as it has internal electrical problems, common. You will probably soon need a new ETM.

How much time do you think I possibly have before the ETM causes performance problems?

Performance seems ok and no different than before ETS light tripped.
Money is extremely tight right now. Hoping to buy some time.

Also New York State inspection is coming in a few weeks.
Do you know if the ETS light being On will stop me from passing inspection?

If it comes back on and stays on, you won't make it to the inspection site.."driveability issues"; mine just went out, and car wouldn't go over 20 mph. Figure on a thousand bucks or so, plus the tow if you aren't near enough to the dealer to drive it there. If it's intermittent now, assume it will go, at the least convenient time and place. It's a dealer-only item, since they reprogram when the fix is done.

ETS warning lamp. When u have an electronic throttle problem.

Also, read the ODBII codes and there were none.
