replacing a strut bearing 850 1996

My 1996 855 T-5 is creaking. My mechanic says the culprit is the upper strut bearing and mount on the RH side. These terms mean little to me so I am trying to get a picture of it locked into my head. I looked at the IPD webite and I *think* I've got it now:

The bearing is the circular part inside the mount
The bushing is the rubber thing that covers the whole mount.

Do I have this right? If so, can we replace the bearing, if that's all that is bad, and not the entire mount? FYI, IPD is selling it for about $110.

Thank you.

    The item you are talking about is the upper strut mount. The bearing is not bad but the strut mount is broken more than likely. you can check by prying up the covers on the mount under the hood and looking at the mount, If you pry it up high enough you will be able to see which one is broken.

    Dan;
    My 1995 850 GLT (122k miles) recently had the same noises predominantly coming from the passenger side. I replaced what I understand to be the strut mounts (rubber coated) for $32 a pair from eEuroparts.com. I know nothing about any bearings. The sound is now once again sweet silence.

      You may want to look at the sway bar links before replacing the strut bearing. I have had to replace these twice in the 170,000 miles on my 855 turbo. They creak and groan similar to the strut bearing of which I have had to replace when I installed my Bilsteins. Good Luck...

        creaking noise from rear-passenger wheel area 850 1995

        I have a 95 850GLT and it has an occasional creaking sound from the rear passenger wheel area, and seems to be more noticable on bumpy roads. I havent jacked it up or crawled under there....so I don't have a clue yet. Does the GLT have the same sway bar setup? It is the whole link that needs to be replaced, or are there replacable bushings? Also there is a loud whining/humming sound that sometimes emanates from the rear-passenger side when turning 90 degrees or more - like pulling into a driveway or parking lot. I was thinking it could be a dragging brake pad/sticky caliper or maybe a wheel bearing. any thoghts?
