ETS light on--driveability affacted. Suggestions? Longish lament S70 1999

'99 S70 T5, 61K miles. Had had intermittent P1171 code for last 10K miles, with no perceptible effect on driving or fuel efficiency; P0455 code accompanied by a "putt-putt" around left front of engine area, variable with engine speed--disapppeared when I replaced cannister purge valve last week or so.
Today, drove to work with no difficulty; parked about 5 hours till lunch, about 40 degrees F outside. When car was started, it sounded a bit odd and the ETS light was on. Ets remained on after repeated start. Drove about a mile, and put the generic code reader on it when I got home. Current codes showing are:
P1171 P0455 P0121 PO1615 PO1608
The 121, 1615, and 1608 are new and troublesome.
Alldata indicates the generic 1608 interprets as an ECM 903F--throttle unit internal problem.
Questions:
Is it likely that I have two seperate problems, or is the new problem related to the prior 0455 and / or 1171 codes?
Is there a way I can do further diagnosis with limited equipment ( over a hundred miles from the dealer, and the predicted "driveability issues" sure are noticeable with the ETS light on!)
Sure am glad my ancient Dodge 318 PU still runs.

    ETS light on--fixed; update S70 1999

Just got the car back from the dealer in St Louis. Total repair cost to me, including both the throttle control unit and the MAF, $124.00. Turns out that the aftermarket service contract folks decided to cover it, except for the $50 deductible and some clamps, and other small parts. Haven't added it up yet, but just scanning the bill, the parts would have been about eight hundred bucks (however, they give you a box of candy to eat on your way home--cost is hidden in the "miscellaneous shop overhead" item). If I can manage to have another 4-5 hundred in covered repairs before the service contract runs out, it'll have paid for itself.
BTW, the dealer pitched my IPD throughpass gas cap, claiming it was one source of codes (possible, tho it's been on the car for three years now); I checked the IPD site and they now have a warning not to use that cap on '99 and later cars( just below a long story about how well it worked on a V70). Now to see how much of the $400 tow bill (120 miles at $3/mile, plus $40 hook fee) I can get reimbursed by my insurance company. Meantime, I'm gonna be nice to my old truck--never know when it's going to be needed because the S70 is down with Dutch elm disease or Belgian waffle syndrome or some damned thing.

      ETS light on--fixed; update S70 1999

I have the a V70 with the same issue and has been the throttle module has been replaced and clean, but the issue returned in about 15000 miles. I have had the similar issue for since 28000 miles and now I have 63000 miles and they will not fix it. I can show where the same symptoms have existed for 5 times. I am so frustrated with Volvo not standing behind their product, so I have secured a attorney to help with this issue. This ETS light issue is happening to many people and it should be a recall. I would love for others to share their information so I can get the ball rolling on a suit against Volvo.

ETS light on-- car on flatbed heading into the sunset, trailing stream of greenbacks S70 1999

All the replies are appreciated. There are no volvo shops, indy or otherwise, within 125 miles--just shipped it off to Brentwood Volvo on a flatbed; I don't even want to contemplate what the tow bill is going to be, much less the cost of repair. I'll also find out just how much the aftermarket extended service agreement they sold me is worth.

    ETS light on--only one solution S70 1999

Take the car to a Volvo dealer as they have to replace the ETM and reload software into the new unit. If you try replacing it yourself or have it done elsewhere, the car won't run until new dealer only software is DLd into it.

    Bru -
I feel your pain. You are part of an ever-expanding group that no one wants to be associated with. Check out my post from about a week ago. The exact same thing happened with my 2000 V70/XC. I hate to break it to you, but depending on where in the country you live, you are looking at a $900 to $1100 repair that can ONLY be done at the dealer. The reason is that they not only replace the defective throttle control module, but they also download new software into your car's brain and no indy has it.

You can also check out my and other posts about this on www.volvoxc.com under the 1997-2000 forum. It is truly unbelievable. I urge you to call Volvo of North America and log a complaint, the more people that do, the more likely they are to step up to the plate and do the right thing.

    Their number is 800-458-1552

    Still hoppin' mad

P1171 was my MAF sensor. Mail ordered it for $162 plus shipping
and since I have had No cel or problems for the last 7 months.

When I changed it I also noticed much better fuel economy
      and much softer starting.

Probably a ETM I had to have mine replaced in my '99 S70 T5 I had to pay $750 to an Independent Volvo Shop that had a VADIS subscription with Volvo so they could program the unit. The dealer wanted like $1200 so if I were you I would call around and see if any volvo shop in your area have VADIS.
