Something strange at startup... 850 1997

Several times as of late, on startup, but not every time, the car starts normally, but when I put my foot on the brake and then try to shift into reverse, I cannot push in the button on the shift knob. I then wait a few seconds and try again, and then it shifts normally. I noticed that the tracs light on the dash goes out right when it wants to shift normally.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

My '96 850 does this but it seems to only do it when the weather gets warm. I'm not sure why that would be. But, wiggling the key in the ignition usually takes care of it, you will get a feel for what key position works. I'm not sure that this is a long term solution, but it works for me.

    Rick,
There is a cable that runs from the ignition lock to the shift lock mechanism. You either have a failed iginition lock (as the other post mentioned) or more likely you have a bad shift lock which is famous for failing.
