Intermittant Check Engine Light 850 1994

The Check Engine light goes on intermittantly on my 1994 Volvo 850. It may turn on when I start the car, and may not, then turn itself off again while driving, or not. Or, it may go on while driving and turn itself off again before I reach my destination.

I checked for codes - there aren't any.

I do have the ABS/Trac Light problem that everybody else has. That's intermittant, too. Plenty written about that topic in previous posts.

Any suggestions about my check engine light?

Kathy

Ah! I forgot to mention that by the time I get home to check for codes, the check engine light is no longer on. Hence, no codes. Tough to immediately stop and check codes when the light does blink on.

Make yourself feel good and learn a little bit about your car. You don't even need a manual. Many intermittent faults are loose grounds or grounds going loose. Get a couple of screwdrivers and some wrenches and sockets and start gently (!) tightening up any connection you can find where a wire goes to the body of the car or the engine block. Just snug them up. If you find a loose one that may be your problem, if not, you did a good thing anyway. Crawl under the car and look up, you'll be suprised at where volvo fastens ground wires. 70% of driveability problems are due to loose connectors or wiring faults. Anyone can trace a wire, if it looks frayed on the outside, suspect the inside. Good luck.
