Just a short note on the centre cup holder/armrest. The holder as you know, slides in and out. With kiddies and their spilled, sticky drinks, this device can easily get stuck in the stored position. A screwdriver and some aggrevation will solve the problem, but a head's up none-the-less.

I may have been confusing in my original post. I would not put a child booster seat in a 3rd row rear facing seat. I am talking about replacing the cup holder center arm reat in the regular rear seat with a child booster type center arm rest. Adding a rear facing 3rd row seat is a separate question.

Do I really have to replace the entire seat back, or can my center arm rest be removed and a booster seat inserted in it's place?

As for the built-in safety seat, you could swap the seat back with someone. You might get lucky and the new back would have the slot it needs for the third seat. I suspect that many cars with one would have the other.

You might find the whole shebang at a salvage yard. I doubt that the rear seat back, or the third seat would be damaged in an accident.

Not sure about the back seat, but I had the 3rd aux seat put in my 98. The integrated seat would not fit in 3rd seat set up. It is a very tight configuartation. More importantly, children under 55lbs or car seats in the third seat area are a safety No No. So says Volvo manual.
