My wife owns a '98 V70 GLT with the light-pressure turbo that we purchased new. The car has about 75,000 miles and has been serviced on a regular basis. Recently, I noticed that her car has a clicking noise when the engine is running, regardless of rpms.
I suspect that she may have a stuck or gummed up lifer that is clicking. Has anyone had a similar experience and if so, what did you do short of taking the engine apart to replace the lifters.

We replaced a few sets of lifters at our shop before realizing the problem is usually never the lifters but the oiling of the lifters from the oil pump. Now we simply remove the oil pan and clean the pick up tube and replace all the o-rings (carefully!). Sometimes we will even find "cotton like substance" in the pick up tube. Look at is as an expensive oil change, about 4 hrs. labor.

About my previous post....

It would have been a lot less frustrating if I had removed the subframe first before removing the oil pan on my V70R. The passenger side of the oil pan was a REALLY tight squeeze. It took several tries and several choice words and skinned nuckles to get the oil pan back on.

Maybe removing the subframe would be a good idea.

My 1999 V70R had a similar problem 2 months ago. It had a ticking valve lifter due to lack of oil supply. Rich Kelly/Bay13 at volvospeed.com helped me diagnose the problem. He told me that the o rings in the oil pan probably needed to be replaced. He said that it is a common problem with all front wheel drive Volvos. Using his instructions, I removed the oil pan and replaced the o rings myself. I did not have to remove the subframe as mentioned in the post prior to yours on this site. It fixed the problem. No more ticking lifter. When the engine is running and I remove the oil cap, there is a lot more oil sloshing around on the camshaft than before.

The only sound my engine makes now when at idle is a soft ticking sound from the fuel injectors working. The ticking valve lifter was a harder clacking sound.

I tried to cut and paste the o ring instructions from volvospeed.com, but no luck. That site is having a problem retrieving archived posts right now.

Bill, thanks so much for the response. What you have provided to me will be really helpful and is along the lines of what I suspected.
I visit volvospeed.com quite often and will try to look for the archived post.
Do you recall how long ago that Rich helped you diagnose the problem so that I can pinpoint this info when I attempt to retrieve this info?

Rich gave me a lot of good info about relacing the o rings. I bought the o ring kit from Volvo, part # 8648358, and the liquid gasket compound, part # 11610599. I bought a small foam paint roller to use as an applicator from Wal-Mart, as Rich suggested. I also ordered the 2 additional o rings for the oil cooler lines part # 30637339 (replaces part # 9463173).

When volvospeed.com gets their archived posts retrieval fixed, Look at the second page of the thread titled "V70R hydraulic valve lifter ticking" on Volvospeed.com. I am prety sure it was the end of November 2003, November 24 sounds about right. Rich gave me some really good info about which o rings to replace, with a diagram. Pretty cool.

I subscribed to alldatadiy.com (25 dollars a year) to get the detailed oil pan removal instructions for my V70R. That really helped a lot.

There were 2 o rings between the oil pan and the block, behind the crankshaft pulley. Two of the o rings that I replaced actually in the oil pan itself, on either end of a crossover pipe that takes oil to the oil cooler, which is mounted to the back side of the oil pan. You will need 2 oil cooler o rings too. The other o ring that I replaced was at the end of the oil pickup/strainer tube, where it attaches to the block. I did not replace my turbo oil return line gaskets, they are not leating (yet), but I have them just in case.

If you don't mind,, what was the mileage of your V70R when you had to replace the o-rings?

I have a '99 V70R that I am having some starting problems with and just curious of possible future problems I may have.

My 1999 V70R had 70,000 miles on it when I replaced the O rings in the oil pan.

I just bought the car in October of 2003, it had the ticking valve lifter problem when I purchased it. I am glad that I did not let that problem stop me from buying the car, the o rings were a pretty cheap fix. I switched to Mobile 1 synthetic oil after replacing the O rings and am expecting a long life from this engine, hopefully.
