auto transmission fluid recomendations....

Ok im planning to flush the trans on my 850 (95)....

I believe the correct fluid is Dexron IIe (it has been suggested Dexron III is also ok)....

Because Im finding it difficult to get confirmation on what is actully right I went to the dealer today..and said ok..how much for 12 litres of atf for a 95 850...they recommend (and sell) a mineral ATF and its (wait for it!) £156 for 12 litres (circa $240!)..basically i told him where he could insert the tube on that one! (did get 2 new clamps and o rings, 2 in case i mess one up and on the basis of doing it again is only 30 k aways....)

so....

1) anyone know the score (for sure...) on what fluids are ok (spec wise!)
2) I would like to go synthetic....anyone know EXACTLY which fluids meet this spec
3) anyone got a good source in the UK....
4) anyone got any advice on this other than using the bay 13 method....

I checked Mobil UK webpage and they list only one Mobil1 Synthetic ATF. They list few other ATFs but they all are dino oil based.

A biased answer: AMSOIL synthetic ATF leads the pack.
Since it probably would be difficult, if not impossible for you to locate,
good choice would be Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. Only requirement that you need concern yourself about is that somewhere on the label it says Dexron III-- or Dexron III(approved for G-specification) or (better) (approved for H-specification).

auto transmission fluid recomendations...and flush procedure..

Kick inside,

Knowing you can handle our obsolete English units, I offer this. This method works with 850/S70 but there are small differences for the 6 Cyl S80.

Power flushing is a simple DIY job. I use synthetic Mobil-1 ATF or
Amsoil. You will need up to 15 quarts.
Disconnect the upper cooling hose. Open the metal clamp carefully and
wiggle, wiggle, pull, pull. The oil will come out of the hose end when the engine runs. Clamp 6 ft of clear plastic 1/2 inch ID hose (hardware store item) over
the hose end and prepare to drain into gallon bottles or a calibrated
bucket, so that you know when you have removed about 12 quarts. Idle
the engine to pump out fluid. Shut off immediately when bubbles appear
in the clear hose. Add two quarts down the dipstick hole using a tranny
filler funnel and hose from auto supply or chain store. Repeat the
pump/fill cycle. Somewhere in the middle of this you may run the shift
thru D N R while idling to assist the clean out. Once you've removed 12
quarts, the fluid should start running clean shortly thereafter, at
which point reinsert the cooling hose into the radiator. Top off the level per the owner's manual, being careful not to overfill.

synthetic fluid is the best, mobil 1 is a great choice.

Dexron is used for non-synthetic fluids and Dexron 3 is fine. If you have a Wal-mart or Sam's in the UK you can find it by the case for $13.

UK has no Wal-mart, Cosco, BJ or Sam's. They are mostly in US and a few in Asia pacific region.

Mobil only sell their synthetic fluid with the brand : Mobil 1. Otherwise, they just sell the oil as Mobil. Mobil 1 ATF is synthetic transmission fluid. It is about 6 dollar per quart in USA. Therefore I paid about 80 dollars for 12 quarts of Mobil 1 ATF in last time (100k miles) that I changed the tranny fluid.

I am going to change it again at 130k miles.

Good luck,

Can you tell us what ATF they sell in UK ?

In US, Mobil only sell their synthetic fluid as Mobil 1. Therefore, we have, in US, Mobil 1 engine oil, Mobil 1 ATF. For non-synthetic fluid, Mobil just sell them as Mobil engine oil or Mobil ATF. However, we do have other brand synthetic ATF such as Castrol, Amsoil, Quacker, etc.

Im not really sure.i just did a web search and after lots of hunting turned up a place that listed a few products with the names but no real specs...at which point I decided I didnt know enough to decide..so came and asked the question...

I have actually decide to use a dyno fuid for now for a couple of reasons...

1) The tranny has done 60k and (im guessing) is still on its original fill..so im planning to do a short change this time to get rid of any crud...

2) GETTING synthetic fluid is proving incredibly difficult

3) My experiances with Mobil products have been....lets say so so in the past (and their customer service stinks...still waiting for the prommised email on a tech question 6 months later...)

4) I can get the dyno from my local parts guy for this saterday...

5) Cost... I can get 15 litres of dyno for 1/3 of the cost of synthetic...so i figure i will just change more often (at least for a couple of changes...)
