Retrofit trip computer on a 2000 V-70? Advice, please V70-XC70

Can anybody out there please tell me whether I can retrofit a trip computer on a GLT 2000 V-70 without having my Volvo master's license? I'm thinking of buying one without, and wonder if I looked around the wrecking yards for a used trip computer, which years (including the 850 series) would fit the 2000 V-70, and whether it would take a rocket scientist to install and hook it up. I've worked a lot on my wife's 97 850 GLT wagon (which came with the trip computer already installed), but Volvo is making it increasingly more difficult for the DIY's to work on the later model cars in order to throw more work to the dealer service garages. I'm assuming this car is prewired for it and all you have to do is plug it into pre-existing leads. But I've discovered belatedly over the years it's never wise to presume anything about prewiring on a Volvo. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Dick

Here's a page in swedish about inserting a trip computer from an x70 into an 850
    http://www.backspegeln.com/tips_dator.asp

I'm from Sweden so I'll translate the important stuff

First is says that you do this on your own risk and there are no garanties it will work, yadda yadda

The part number for his Swedish 850 GLT -95 (which are quite different from the US GLT's BTW) is 9166688, and it costs about $400

The picture texts is about the diassembly. Notice the two screws under the top of the dashboard.

It says nothing about computer reprogramming. He just fired it up and it worked at once. A 1 hour job.

The 2000 V-70 might be a different story however.

    /Patrik, Sweden

Does your instrument cluster already have the display? If not, I've got a spare instrument cluster and we could work something out for the display if you'd like.

'98 and newer V70's instrument clusters are already wired for the trip computer option.

You'll need a computer trip switch for the dash, connector is already there,

then, you'll need to have the dealer activate this option with their volvoscan computer. Most charge an hour labor for a a 5 min activation.
