Do the 1993 850's use wheel bearings or hub assembly? I'm Confused. 850 1993

Hello all, first post. I have been lurking here for awhile and decided to register so I can ask a question.I have used the search feature concerning wheel bearings for the front end and I am confused.I definitely have a wheel bearing problem and it has gotten worse over the past week.I have tried all the local auto part stores and they either said that I needed a bearing or hub assembly and that they carry neither for a 1993 850.Do the 1993 850's use a bearing or hub assembly? This is my wifes car and it seems that I will have to order the parts anyway.I dont want to tear into just to find out that they sent the wrong parts.

I would assume that your '93 is similar to my '95 850 but I don't know for sure. I had to have the right front wheel bearing/hub assembly replaced a couple of months ago. You have to replace the whole hub/bearing assembly. I had it replaced at a Gemini Auto Store and they used a genuine Volvo assembly. I paid about $250 for the part and installation. I understand that an aftermarket part is available at a lower cost, but I chose to have the Volvo part installed.

Sims, thanks very much for the response. I believe I am going to tackle this myself.I consider myself a "ShadeTree Mechanic" but I have never turned a bolt on a Volvo.I am going to try and call the Volvo dealership tommorrow and see if they might have the assembly in stock. Is there anything that I need to look out for while attempting the repair, or any tips or tricks....Jay

First, if you're not in a hurry, ordering parts on-line can save a lot of money.

This job involves removing the axle from the hub. The axle nut can be a pain, especially if it is still the original nut. You can "rent" an axle nut socket from autozone for free.

Depending on how careful you are, you might also mangle the axle nut pounding on it (pound on the nut, not the axle, to preserve the threads). So it wouldn't hurt to have a new axle nut ahead of time.

The hub itself is secured with torx bolts, so you will need some torx sockets. The Haynes manual has a pretty good description. I found it useful to have the replacement bolts in-hand to get the right sized sockets.

In the process, you'll also be removing the brake caliper assembly, and the rotor. So if you need your brakes fixed too, this is a good time to do it. You need a special brake caliper tool to loosen the brakes. (again, see haynes).

And since you'll be removing the axle from the hub, you might also want to check the condition of your CV boots on that side.

        Good luck, - Bill -

I don't believe that it is a very complicated procedure to replace the hub assembly. I do some repair work on my Volvos but I tend to stay away from suspension type repairs. I let my capable independent Volvo mechanic handle those things. I'm sure you will get a lot of suggestions from others very knowledgable folks on the brickboard in the next few hours...good luck on your repair.
FYI, You might check out the following website for many different types of repairs specific to 850's (but, I didn't see hub replacement there) This might help you out in the future.
