transfer case/bevel gear/angle gear for AWD 1998 V70-XC70 1998

Does anyone know where I could get a "gently used" front bevel gear for 1998 AWD V70? This is the transfer case which makes the rear wheels spin or gives power to the rear wheels. Apparently a new one costs about $2400 canadian.

Paul

Paul--I checked a large wrecking yard here in the States for you, Greenleaf New England (1-800-752-0146), who advertise having over 700 Volvos in stock, and the salesperson I talked to (Jason) said they would not tear a transmission apart to get the gear. You would have to buy the transmission complete. Volvo made a number of upgrades on this gear because of its early failures, so check with a dealer and find the latest upgrade and transmission that will fit your car, and begin your search. For what you have to pay for the gear here in the US ($1700) plus labor ($2000+), no wrecking yard is going to charge you that much for a used tranny that will fit your car. There are, as I type, 1257 V-70's for sale across the US, of which 90% are AWD. The Volvo wrecking yards have to be full of AWD's where you can score a transmission. Dick

Several months ago, I saw an ad for a 1998 v70 awd with a 5 speed manual transmission at a wrecker in Quebec. The ad stated that the car had been stolen, stripped, then written off. I found it on autotrader.ca. The driveline was intact, according to the writeup. They were actually attempting to sell the car as a rebuild project, but the asking price was WAY too high given the poor resale of Volvos recently. If the wagon is still available, they might part it out.

    Good luck.
