V70 T5 Experiences, Turbo life etc V70-XC70

I have found a 2001 V70 T5 (5 speed) with 62,000 miles on it. $16,800 with maintainence records etc. It is flawless. Carfax etc. is good and I talked with the original owner.

What have people's experience been with Turbo life, maintaince with the T5s.

I currently have a 1999 S70 with 110,000 miles (5 speed) and a 1994 Wagon with 150,000 miles (5 speed) Both have been excellent cars.

Thanx

As a '99 V70 owner, I know two people who had the T5 model and for both, it was a lemon. The common problem was a reocurring "check engine" light that resulted in numerous, frustrating and expensive trips to the dealer. Both gave up on Volvo and bought a Subaru and BMW 325i respectively. It seems that people either love their T5's or hate them - there's no middle ground. I'm very pleased with my non-turbo V70.

I have 133,000 miles on my '98 V70T5, it still uses absolutely NO oil between changes, the turbo is original (well, except for the pesky $7 oil return line "o" ring that always fails) the clutch is original and the manual transmision still shifts like new. Mechanically, it's been a dream.

Unfortunately it's still required a LOT of maintenance, particularly relating to the electrics and electronics. I won't even try to enumerate the problems, but my stack of service receipts wouldn't fit in the glovebox well before I reached 100,000 miles. i wouldn't exactly say it's been an electrical nightmare, that I'd reserve for a Saab or an Audi, but it's been about "fair" at best.

Your T5 should be similar to your other Volvos. I assume the
others are not turbo models. I'd recommend synthetic oil with
the turbo and regular maintenance. Other then that you should
be fine since the turbo is actually one of the more reliable
components under the hood.

I have a 98 T5M with about 75K and it has been fine for the past
three years with the recent exception of the thermostat (they
seem to fail at about 70K miles). I've never had any problems
with the turbo.

If the oil was changed regularly about every 3,000 miles, and if all the other fluids were changed regularly and and if all the other required maintenance was performed then there is no reason not to expect a long life from that car, including the turbo. Turbochargers will all ultimately fail, but with frequent oil changes there is no reason for them not to go 200,000 miles before replacement.

Be sure to read through the maintenance records to verify the work that was done.
