Check engine light, thermostat and ECT failure S70

I think the thermostat and ECT sensor failed on my S70 during record cold in New England. The car seems to be driving fine, but will I damage more expensive components, if I wait for warmer weather next week before replacing the parts.

Bay 13 suggests using a 7 inch long 40 torx bit(3/8 drive) to remove the thermostat cover, but my auto supply/hardware stores only carry a torx 3/8 inch socket that is too short and fat to reach the back screw. Can anyone suggest a source for the longer torx bit?

If I don't want to drain the coolant, what kind of clamp are people using on the radiator hose to prevent spillage?

Thanks.

How do you know the temp sensor is bad. When my thermostat failed it threw a code for the sensor but the old Volvo mechanics who fixed it just replaced the thermostat and reset the ECU and it's been fine since.

It looks like you were right. I replaced just the thermostat and everything seems normal now. Heat is nice and warm, and the gauge is reading at the 3 o'clock position even though it's 4 degrees outside. Maybe the fan was running as a precaution, because of the Check Engine condition. Thanks.

Initially, I thought the problem was just a bad thermostat. However, on my last trip the electric radiator fan continued to run after I shut off the engine. I think that indicates the ECT sensor is reporting bad data.

I got the ECT 123 code JUST as I was on my way to get the state inspection to finish the registration process on my car. Volvo $100 to replace thermostat... independent mechanic $80-$100 to replace thermostat. Local parts store $6.45 for a thermostat.

I'm hoping that's all it is - sounds same.

Does anyone know if/how long one has to drive to have the codes clear out? Anything I can do to clear the codes? It'll still fail the "test" if the codes are in there.

        Thanks
