Check Engine Light S70 1998

Fellas:
Check engine light came on, car runs fine. I hooked it up to a generic OBD II reader (Harbor Freight Special), no code shown, just four dashes(----). Any ideas out there? Could there be some other underlying problem? Thanks.
Denny

well, if the car runs fine, i'd first tighten the gas cap, then use that tool to clear the codes. If the light comes back on, then you gotta get it read for real. If it stays away, then it was that damned gas cap (or just a false trigger, which is always a possibility).

Don't be misled by the dashes. I purchased and tested the same code reader and at best it only cleared the codes one out of five times. It never displayed a code I had P0455.
I had no luck with that particular reader.
Have somebody with a good quality OBDII scanner read the codes.
