Clicking sound from engine S80 2004

There is a noticable clicking sound coming, I think, from the engine of my car only higher--i.e. freeway speeds. Over --60 mph or above, if I press the accelerator I hear it and it is slowly getting louder with time. Formerly I thought it was pre-ignigion knock but now I am not so sure. Car is US spec. 6,000 miles, I use 93 octane fuel. On the freeway, I have taken the car up to, oh 75 mph put the transmission in Neutral, the clicking sound goes away. Back in gear and press the accelerator, it's there again. It is starting to be intrusive: You can't not hear it

Hoping someone can give me some help or information here, before I take the car to my dealer.
Basically I love the car, I think it will be a very good machine.

Sounds like a transmission problem, because if you put the transmission in neutral it will no longer move until it is put back into gear again. And this is when your sound stops.

    Michael,

To find out wheter it is pre-ignition or not:

Knocking or pre-ignition generally will be more present during (hard) acceleration and/or under load. If the sound is also present during cruising, then it is most likely NOT pre-ignition.

Pre-ignition can be audible for a short time when using low/mid grade gas: It takes time before the motor management recognizes the sound from the knock sensors and retards ignition and/or decreases turbo boost as reaction. If you press the accelerator real hard (using low/mid grade), then this could even be out of the range of retardation and you will hear some "knocks".

So, if you hear the sound ONLY during acceleration or load, then it might be pre-ignition.

    Let me hear your experience.

    Kind regards,

    Dutch
