Moaning in cold; rpm- and steering-sensitive V70-XC70

2001 V70 T5; 60k. Symptons: Moaning (loud) from engine compartment at cold start (below 20 degrees); moaning when turning steering wheel while engine is still cold (goes away after warmup); moaning is rpm-sensitive (increases with engine speed). I have searched and found numerous references: belts; tensioner; motor mounts; blower motor; pumps; oil viscosity. I was wondering if anyone has recently experienced the same and been able to correct it. Thank you.

This moaning has been driving me crazy as well.
I have a 99 V70, and it makes a real racket, on a cold start.
I have renamed the car MONA, because of this noise.
When I tighten ths clamp, and the noise goes away, how will
I explain the name of the car to people?
    Thanks!

Moaning in cold; rpm- and steering-sensitive V70-XC70

I had the same problem intermittently with my 1999 V70 for several winters. I finally solved it a few weeks ago. It turned out to be a loose connection on the suction hose for the power steering pump. In cold weather the hose was loose and would allow air to be sucked into the pump which would cause the fluid to foam and cavitate the pump. After the engine warmed up, the noise went away. The area around the power steering pump reservior was always damp but I did not realize that is was due to the foaming fluid escaping out the top. After tightening the clamp at the pump connection (4 turns!), the noise has completely disappeared. I hope this helps, I know how this problem drove me crazy!

Thanks for this advice! I have '99 V70 with the same problem (my wife jokes that the car sounds like it's farting). Where can I find instructions on where this hose is located?

Thanks very much for your insight Mr. L; I will definitely look at the steering pump hose. I appreciate the advice particularly because it's the sort of problem (intermittent; cold start) that might have required me to leave my car in service overnight.
