2000 V40 OBD Emissions inspection US S40-V40

I have a 00' V40. I had to get the emission certificate for renewing the registration. Unfortunately, the OBD codes were unreadable. I had the same problem last year and when I contacted Volvo, they talked to the local emissions authority and gave a waiver. They said it was because of a software issue which made the emissions machince incompatible with the car. Has anyone faced a similar situation?

    Unfortunately Volvo and other manufacturers are now making many of the OBD codes proprietary to discourage the owners and indepandant shops from doing maintenance and repair.

    The basic codes and those dealing with emissions componants are standardized by federal law. It must tell you in standard code wether the O2 sensor and such are working. The Volvo OBD system must be compatible for these required codes. Perhaps the emissions inspectors were able to determine that the emissions system was up to par and Volvo probably gave them an explanation that any other codes found were in the "other" catagory.
