Arrrrggghh! 850 1997

I have a 97 850 T-5 and ever since I paid the dang thing off, its been giving me fits. The most important just started. I cranked her up and noticed a grumbling in the RPM's at idle. It smoothed out some and after stopping, it wouldn't start again. Just turned over but wouldn't start. It was warm, so its not the cold start, could it be something in the injectors or something simpler (I hope)?

Secondly, what is normally a flame throwing heater, now blows cold air out of the center vents and there is a faint oder of anti-freeze. The outsides are stil warm (not hot) and the fan is working but no heat. Stuck thermostat or a heater core?? any ideas??

Lastly, I am getting a vibration which seems to be coming from the rear of the car that increases at speed and will actually shake the steering wheel on a decent at about 65 mph. YES, the tires have been balanced and re-balanced. Could a warped rotor cause this? What else?

Don't get me started on the cruise control, ABS light and door lock remote.

Its a great car and hasn't given me a stitch of problems till just recently but now it seems like the functional obsolesence (76k miles) is kicking in big time. HELP>

thanks.

D.

I replaced my friend's fuel pump in her '97 850 GLT. Sounds similar. The car had problems starting and then one day it didn't start at all. Had to have it towed. I eventually diagnosed it to be the fuel pump. The job isn't too difficult for an average DIYer. Just a couple of notes. Use the instructions in the Haynes manual as a guide. There is a plastic ring that retains the fuel pump assembly. I used an oil filter wrench that has 2 "C" shaped jaws to loosen the plastic ring. When disconnecting the positive terminal from the pump, make sure you press the detent to release it from the spade connector. FCPGroton.com sells it for $175 + s&h.

Dunno about the other stuff, but if the temp gauge operates normally it's probably not the thermostat. If you pull up the driver's side floor mat and there's a puddle of coolant underneath the mat there's probably a leaky heater core.

There is also a damper lever for the fresh air intake door that tends to work off the shaft or break, see the brickboard archives. http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=160823 If it fails open that would keep the cabin temperature low.

Don't know about the majority of your problems, but the vibration could be a thrown ply within the tire. It may balance, but shakes the car badly.
