Possible to replace odometer gear on 94 850? 850

I see an interesting claim on Ebay right now to fix a broken 94 850 odometer. The person sounds like he knows what he is talking about, but I thought the odometer was a sealed unit. I have to take the dash apart to replace bulbs soon and it would be too nice to just pop in a gear and have the odometer work again. I'm not thrilled about putting in a used cluster showing alot less miles.

Search ebay under "volvo gear" and it will come up. 20 bucks for the little piece of plastic.

If anyone has done this and it works, let me know.

Thanks!

Gwen.

Once repaired, the mechanical odometer can be reset using the mileage info stored in the ECU. For info on how to read the ECU's odometer value, see:

Possible to replace odometer gear on 94 850? 850

Gwen,
I sent mine off after a few years ago, after getting the unit out of the dash myself, and had the gear put in for about $100. I have read many posts here about people buying the very gear you're talking about and repairing the unit themselves with success. The odometer is not sealed and the problem of the broken gear is common for '94 850s.

Easy replacement 850

If you can get the cluster out, replacement is very easy. Just be patient and exercise care. I replaced my odometer gear in about 45 minutes. Good luck!! By the way, it's pretty self explanatory once you get the cluster apart. Amazingly, the 850 odometer is ridiculously easy to roll back or forward, no safeguards against that. I rolled mine a bit forward actually, to keep accurate mileage. Have fun!
