What Code Reader to Use V70-XC70 2001

I would like to buy a code reader to be able to read the trouble codes in my 2001 V-70 Turbo. Can I use a Universal Code Reader that fits vehicles with generic OBDII connector? I have a chance to buy one a a good price but want to be sure it can be used.
