Winter/Snow Tires? S70 1998

Currently I have a set of 5 months old all season tires on my S70. I am debating whether I should get a set of winter tires or not. However, I am also trying to minimize my spending. Here are my options:
1. A set of 4 from dealer for $850 + tax
2. A set of 2 from dealer for $425 + tax (for front wheels)
3. Get a set of 4 (or just 2) from other tire stores
4. Stick with my all season tires like I have done in the past.

All suggestions & opinions are appreciated.

How long do you plan on keeping the brick?

If you think 3 years or more, a set of snows will allow both sets to last for 3 years or most likely, more. You also get to use one of the off-season tires as a full-size spare.

It snows pretty good in Toronto, doesn't it?

Get 4 snow tires, never 2. Check dealer special for 4 Gislaveds, or Tirerack.com. I hate steel wheels and prefer cheaper alloys. I get mine at Tire Rack, mounted, balanced and delivered to you or their local installer.

what kinda snow do u have? if u have just a few light snow storms a year...all seasons should do fine. if u r like somewhere upstate ny or something... then snows should help a great deal.

don't get it at the dealer...

for snows, just get some steel rims and a good set of snows like the bridgestone blizzaks or michelin alpins (not the pilot alpin, these suck) from tires.com or tirerack.com...or some cheaper alloy rims if u wanna stay away from steel....

      Howdy
I definitely recommend getting the snows. All-season should be called 3-season (useless in winter on both snow and ice). A reputable tire shop will not install two snows on the front (they will put two on the back). The rear tires must have traction that is no worse than the front tires (I found out the hard way). Having learned to drive in Montreal's harsh winters on rear-wheel drive cars where it was normal to have snows on the drive wheels I thought the snows needed to go only on the drive wheels on a front-wheel drive car. NOT! The tire shop made me sign a waiver when I insisted. I was back there within the hour for the other 2 tires after doing a 360 on a non-divided highway and almost having a front-end collision with a snowplow!
