Synthetic ATF killing MPG? 850 1996

Just changed my '96 850R ATF at 106K to Mobil 1 synthetic (yes, Dexron III with Mercon). Irrespective of any performance/perception differences, now I only get 19.x MPG instead of 21.x MPG. Anybody else experience a drop in fuel economy? I'll dump the $60 synthetic and replace with regular if that's what it takes. Driving habits have not changed, but now that I'm aware my mileage is off I perceive that it takes more effort just to get down the highway.

really you should see either no difference (most likely) or a very slight increase with the sythetic. No chance that they synth is going to cause it to go down (assuming you have filled it to the right level).

I wouldn't jump to conclude that synthetic ATF is the cause for the decreased MPG. MPGs usually always go down in the winter because of oxygenates added to the fuel to improve combustion. Also, I find that the "Mod/Foot Reflex" also may be at fault - I know that it always affects mine. This means with each modification I make to the Volvo or the 4Runner, I tend to be a bit heavy on the gas for the first few days.

Finally, in my experience, I improved my MPG in both my vehicles by switching to Amsoil synthetic fluids.

    Just a few thoughts
    Andrew

How embarassing. Sure enough, when I replaced the ATF the engine was constantly being turned on/off to pump the fluid, backfill, etc. I checked the level while the engine was off. Last night I checked it properly (engine on) and it was 1/2 quart low. That made all the difference. Now it runs more smoothly than ever (bought it at 75K) and my MPG is back to 22 or 23 overall. Definintely worthwhile to go with synthetic (never tried new dino ATF). It is so smooth now (and not just at shift points). Highly recommended. I'd put the $60 back into new synthetic ATF long before I'd waste another $60 on headlight/foglight bulbs. I'm surprised that only 1/2 quart made such a huge difference in feel as well as MPG. I'm convinced it must have freed up a couple of hp considering the difference vs. original fluid.

I'm sold on the syn ATF also. Guys that run temp. gauges on their trannys see a 25-30 degree drop in fluid temp with Mobil 1. That says a lot. I switched a 91 740 to Mobil 1 at 180K. Shifts so smooth I can hardly feel the points any more. MPG drop probably due to "winter" gas.

Can't be the winter gas, since I've averaged 20-22 MPG over the last 30K miles until the day I changed the ATF. The MPG returned the instant I topped off the tranny with 1/2 quart. I put 150+ miles on it today looking for errands to run. Too bad I'm flying to Michigan from KC this week instead of driving. I have to heavily discount the arguments that ATF was meant to be a lifetime fluid/you'll oxidize it by opening the dipstick tube/don't touch it ever/synthetic is too slippery (the more friction the better)/etc. I've found another mod that I'll continue to do to every car I drive from now on. I do agree that it'll probably never be changed again in the car's lifetime, but once at 106K is hardly over-maintaining.

            VolvoNV,

I very much doubt that a 1/2 quart of trans fluid made any difference in mileage.

As someone who has recorded gas fillups in a log book, for an entire life of several cars, I can tell you that variations of +/- two, or three, MPG, between any two fillups, for like driving conditions, are not uncommon.

Every gas pump "clicks" off at a different point. If you filled up your gas with the car pointing downhill, or uphill, you will get dramtically different results. A single fillup, even two fillups, cannot give you an accurate mileage picture.

Think about it. If a 1/2 quart of trans fluid made a 15% difference in mileage, then your trans was dragging your car down and it would have felt as if you were pulling a trailer. Did it? That much drag would have elevated your transmission temperatures to the point of damage.

Point is that no manufacturer designs their transmissions to self-destruct when they are down a half-quart.

The fact that your mileage "improved" after topping up your transmission was a coincidence.

As to "ATF was meant to be a lifetime fluid/you'll oxidize it by opening the dipstick tube". This implies that the transmission system is hermetically sealed. It is not.

Hope your mileage continues to improve.
