water in my oil 850

Can anyone speculate on what gives with my 850--it has water in the oil and oil in the water but no white smoke. Does this seem to be a head or gasket problem? I figure if the heads bad its mucho $--How about if just a gasket--what would that cost to have replaced--Thanks Homer (nervous in Ohio)

What makes you think both fluids are mixing, hopefully not because of normal yellowish crude that usually appears on oil dipsticks in winter?

If in any doubt, pay to have it properly diagnosed by a tech with newer, Volvo "white engine" experience. Headgaskets don't just blow on those engines UNLESS the engine's been overheated, then the head warps requiring a trip to a local machine shop (not cheap).

is this "yellowish crude" foam? i seem to have aquired some foam on the dipstick since the cold has set in. but the oil also smells like gas and i get clouds of blue and white smoke on start up and after idling for a couple minutes. but no oil in the coolant. can you give me any input on my problems?

The yelow stuff on the dipstick is normal condensation but will be more substantial if the car is only used for short trips and/or the t-stat isn't working well (engine running colder than normal).
If used for short trips, the oil will often also smell like gas BUT you could also have another problem too like a bad fuel pressure regular diaphram allowing gas to enter the vacuum line and that'd possibly explain the smoke too.
I wouldn't assume that you have any serious problems but if it's not obvious, I'd advise having it checked by an experienced Volvo tech.

Coolant and oil mixing could also be a radiator fault, as there is an oil/coolant intercooler built into the right side radiator tank. We had oil in the coolant of our '94 850 Turbo, and replacing the radiator cured the problem.

Normally I'd say 100% chance of block cracked or HG blown. However, there are other possibilities, as mentioned above.

Don't assume it's a horrible thing until you get someone in there looking at it.

Then you can panic, scream and run for your life, etc...
