Making a RWD V70?? V70-XC70

I am yerning for the days when RWD was how a true road car handled and want to convert my 98AWD to just RWD! Is it possible to do? I have talked to several friends and they say its just a matter of changing a couple of gears! Any insight as I am very frustrated and want to pull this off over the Xmas hoildays as my son is home from college and can help!

ok try this for a desription of how the system ACTUALLY works...

    http://www.autoworld.com/news/volvo/awd.htm

looks to me like if you disconnected the front wheels (aka probably disconnected the drive shafts in some way...) the car would not move...but the fluid coupling in the rear drive sahft would heat up and lock up provding power to the rear wheels.

It says the system can cope with 95% of the power....

sounds like it might work (but i bet there are some electronics somewhere....)

but then again back to the original question...WHY...why not just trade it against a s/v 90? - you would probably come out ahead...and would get a proper reara wheel drive car...

Direct drive, not fluid coupling V70-XC70

There is NO fluid coupling to the rear wheels at the front of the car, it's strictly mechanical and done via a simple bevel gear (like a ring and pinion inside). Like any differential (and FWD/AWDs are inside the auto trans), if one wheels drive axle is disconnected for any reason, the other side also won't move.
To make it RWD, it'd need a different AT w/o a differential inside BUT with an angle type gear setup to direct the power flow to the RF axle where the AWD bevel gear is attached. A trans like that doesn't exist by Volvo. The weak bevel gear (hot topic here) and rear viscous coupler (a semi fluid coupling device to control slipage in front of the rear diff) couldn't take full drive power w/o blowing.

i bow to your superiour knowledge (pretty much what i think i said in my first post!) but this post was modified fro mthe attached document reference which indicates the rear wheel drive can cope with 95% of the drive power...but as I said..i know nothing...

I'm not trying to argue here but I just don't want to see some poor guy try wasting his time and money for a certain failure based on rumors.

To my knowledge, no car with a transverse mounted engine (in front engine bay) is RWD as that wouldn't make sense power-flow wise. It'd have more added angles thus more parts to wear and probably more power loss as a result too.

    Making a RWD V70?? 850 1995

    ok...bashing aside...

so the system is mechanical... and is 95% front 5% rear nominal... with enough cash... u would need to remove the drive on the front wheels and beef up the rear to take the full load...i do believe the rear only holds up to 50% of the power...

    good luck!

Making a RWD V70.............NOT very likely at all V70-XC70

Whoever said that was wrong. What the car is REALLY now is a FWD car with add-on AWD and done simply by adding a bevel (angle) gear to transmit power back and an added rear diff.
You CAN simply remove the driveshaft (front to rear) and it'll be FWD BUT the trans. also has a diff. inside SO it must have both front axle shafts driving both front wheels or the car won't move. Sure, nothing is totally impossible but I'd say it's not going to happen ever with the stock transmission and Volvo never made a RWD 850/X70.

It'd be easier to just buy a RWD car.

hmm not sure..but points to ponder:-

isthe 4wd computer controlled for power shifting?

you will have all the power running through 2wd..is everything strong enough to handle it...

WHY???? 4wd will outdrive 2wd any day..so WHY?

A cool idea! My dad just got me a used 98 AWD for my 1st year of college and I would love to try the same thing. It has about 140,000 miles on it and It would be cool to do this kinda conversion so I could race my rice buddies.
