850 Coolant 850

I recently flushed the coolant system on my '97 850. I replaced it with Prestone. I've also recently read that the coolant never needs to be replaced in the 850. But so much for figuring that out ahead of time! It's a done deal. Anyway, I noticed that the engine is running cooler than it was before I changed out the coolant. It's not reaching the midpoint on the temp guage. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks.

And I've heard that you never have to change your oil, or fill your car up with gasoline?

    Who told you that?

Do not ever put that person in a position of trust with your car!

You need to replace your thermostat. It's a very easy job and shouldn't take more than half an hour. The thermostat is a cheap part too.

As for the coolant. I don't know where you heard that you don't ever need to change it. It does need changing every two years or so. As it's an easy job I do mine every year.

Probably got an air pocket in the coolant system somewhere. Keep an eye on the coolant level and top off as needed. Eventually the air will work itself out.

All coolant eventually needs to be changed....the service schedule does state to test the strength of the antifreeze, but antifreeze also contains corrosion inhibitors so renewal every few years is recommended.
The thermostats in 850s are a bit fickle. If your temp gauge now stays in the lowest part of the dial and only goes up to normal in heavy traffic, then your thermostat may need replacing. I believe a new 90degC version is used here in the UK.
