Can Electronic Climate Control Rear Sockets or Damper Motor Wires Get mixed Up? 850 1993

I've had my 93 850 GLT for a couple months now. But the ECU is acting very strangely. The right side heating turns off a about two-three minutes (when the REC/AC lights start flashing. After removing the glove box, I noticed the REC switch has no affect on the recirculation damper motor. That motor does, however, activate when the middle dial it turned to the 3 o'clock position.

And, the passenger side temperature dial (when set hot, all the way up) activates the floor/defrost damper motor. Also, the REC switch seems to activate something behind the ECU, probably the passenger side temperature damper motor, as it seems to affect the air temperature before it cuts out.

The previous owner had an evaporator installed earlier this summer. It is possible the mechanic got the wires plugged into the wrong places?

Do I need special tools to remove the radio/casstte?

Thanks if anybody can offer advice.

Having replaced MANY AC evaps, I can tell you that no, it's not likely that anyone accidentally plugged the wiring in wrong (practically impossible). It's more likely that you aren't familiar with the parts that you think you're looking at and possibly mistaken IMHO (no offense). The recirc motor is in the very upmost, right side corner of the dash area and the glovebox must be removed to see it. It only moves when the recirc/fresh air button is moved.
To properly diagnose the problem(s), you need to read the fault codes first and then diagnose those codes rather that guess at parts which can be a costly mistake. Sometimes, it's best to bite the bullit and pay a tech (shop, dealer) who knows that car.
As for the radio, it's too easy. Just push the two side buttons (long tab like things) in, they then pop out and you pull the radio out with them.

      Thanks for responding.

I'm going to check the faults codes this morning, but as I noticed earlier, the REC switch has no effect on the air recirculation damper motor. I had the glove box out yesterday and watched. The center dial activates the damper motor when in the 3 o'clock position.

Are the plugs at the rear of the ECU all the same size and shape? No way to get them mixed up?

I'll let you know what fault codes I discover.

Thanks for your patience and insight.

ECU plugs all different and only insert one-way. The harness is wire-tied to the heater box, no need to remove it either and the harness plugs are placed in a way that couldn't be confused. The code(s) will help aid you in what's wrong but ECU diagnostics is not always simple.

          Frank,

I checked out the fault codes again. For the last week, (bought the Haynes Maual a week ago), I've been getting a 3-2-5 fault. That means "recirculation damper motor active too long."

A couple days ago, I had the floor/defroster damper off to put a small adjustable hose clamp around a split plastic axel. I don't know why, but I performed from the Haynes Maunual "Automatic Self Adjustment." Now I'm getting a 5-1-1 fault the means "damper motor limit position self-adjustment not carried out." So I did the Automatic Self Adjustment again, and a third time.

Tried deleting them twice and they're not going away.

          Whad'ya think??

            The plot thickens.....
I only use the OEM Volvo manuals so I don't know if the Haynes manual is telling you the correct proceedure to do the self adjustment or if it's leading you on a wild goose chase. From the other non-Volvo Haynes manuals I've seen, IMHO they aren't worth owning for anything other than very basic stuff.
I'm not sure that I or others here will be able to easy tell you what's next from here without seeing the car. There are times when you might be better off to take it to a place that knows that car. Most shops will only charge you 1 hour to diagnose an electrical problem so that might be a better option. If you'ld rather still try this by yourself, you can buy an OEM Volvo climate control manual from Volvo by calling 800-25-volvo or order online too through Volvos literature site.

If this damper motor problem continues to bug me, I probably do as you suggest - get the Volvo climate control manual. I might also consider taking the car to a mechanic that can track down the snag and fix it.

Can you give me a link for acquiring the manual online?

              Thanks for helping out!
