Hello fellow Volvo drivers,

After coming back from Thanksgiving on the east coast, I went to start my 850 and the battery was dead...ok, no problem, get a jump start. But I did not anticipate my stereo asking me for a security code to unlock it... because apparently when the stereo looses power, it activates a security feature to prevent unauthorized use...and one *must* enter a 4-digit code of some sort to re-enable it; because all it says now is "OFF." Once the car is shut off for a little while, the stereo asks again for the code—so I have plenty of opportunities to re-enter this code.

As it happens, I bought this ’96 850 used last summer and never knew to ask for this, or that this "feature" (being in quotes because it was not fun to drive 3 hours without my radio, you know how it is) even existed.

So my question to you all is: is there a default code I should try? Unless the previous owner changed it or was able to enter a different code at some point, I would have no recourse other then seeking the help of my local Volvo dealership. And if it wasn’t changed, might there be a default code that would work?

I've tried "1111" and "1234," neither which have worked (which is why I am seeking help :).

The model is SC-811

Any help provided would be greatly appreciated.

    Actually I called Topping Volvo in Olympia WA, gave them my VIN number, they called Volvo corp. and 30 mins later I had the default code which worked...so the previous owner didn't change it.

    The VIN might not work.

    there's a model and serial number on the top of the radio and that's what you should give the guy at the dealership.



    you're in portland, so i'd try jim fisher. the guys at herzog-meier wanted to charge me and have me bring in all kinds of paperwork to give up the security number. at fisher they told me over the phone.

    I also bought my 850 used. Fortunately, the previous owner alerted me to the radio issue that you have. The car came with a credit card size card that has the code. the previous owner also scribbled the code in the car manual. If you cannot find the card with the code, perhaps you can contact the previous owner (if a private individual) for the code. who knows, maybe he/she still has the code. Otherwise, yea, you will have to contact the dealer. good luck.

    You need to contact the dealer with your Car's VIN.

      Check your owners manual .When the car was delivered there would have been a small slip of paper with the radio code printed on it.

        Volvo dealer should be able to pull this up with a VIN. My car is in my moms name, I had to show the registration, AND they called her to verify that they could give it to me. So just phoning them wont help.
