New V70 question V70-XC70

I test drove a new 2004 V70 and as a long time Volvo owner I was impressed. I do have one question though. At an idle should you be able to feel and hear the pulses of the engine as sort of a thrumming. It is noticable at an idle but smooths out under power. Is this normal for a transverse mounted 5 cylinder engine?

My 960 has a very smooth engine with no noticable pulsations at an idle - and that's after 150K miles.

Thanks in advance..

By nature and by design an inline six is about the smoothest engine built. General rule of thumb is the more cylinders the smoother, so the five will be smoother than a four, but not as smooth as a six. A straight eight is even nicer. A V configuration creates some horizontal forces that are not present in an inline, so there is often more vibration. The exhaust of a V sounds better, though. At it's most basic think Harley Davidson. Much is written about that vibration, sometimes in the letters to Penthouse.

IMO the I-5 is not as smooth as an inline 6 or a V12....

I've always thought there was an odd resonance. It was there when my car was new and it's still there at 131,000 miles. The I-5 configuration seems to cancel out a lot of vibrations, but not all of them.

    New V70 question V70-XC70

My 2003V70 T5 does it, the other V70's I test drove at the dealer's did it, and my wife's 98 S70 GLT did it too. I'm afraid it's in the nature of the beast, at least at idle speed.

If the transmission has never been flushed do it, or insist that it is done. When it is done, make sure that it is done with the machine...the one with pictures at Bay 13 at www.volvospeed.com

Sorry guys...don't know how it happened, but it appears I posted in the wrong thread. I tried to edit but it wouldn't let me, so I attach this message to disregard my last entry...it does not belong here but in another thread.
