1994 850 buying advice 850 1994

I am going to look at a 1994 850 this afternoon as a possible replacement for my 1988 740t. The car is not a turbo and has 160M+ miles on it. The seller says it has a new clutch, a/c, brake pads and rotors. Is there anything special problem areas I need to check? Is this a decent model/year? Is it pretty safe (for my son to drive)?

I have a 94 850 that has 200k. Only real problem is the AC evaporator. Other than that it runs like a top. Regular oil changes at 5K with valvoline high nmilage oil.(no synthetic for this one)

Those crappy evaporators often develop leaks, which was probably the cause for the new A/C. Make sure you install the cabin filter kit (not around back in '94, but retrofits easily). It will both purify the air coming through vents and prolong the life of the A/C evaporator by far. That rear main seal on the engine is known for leaking oil and is expensive to replace, only because the transmission has to be dropped to access it. I bought a '94 854 back in Feb. 2002 and it has been trouble-free for the 18k miles I have put on it (now at 89k), except that the rear main seal is leaking oil now....but that's about it.

I bought a 1994 about one year ago. After about one month the rear main seal
went. Also check that the air blows cold. I would also take the car up on the
highway for a good 20 minutes or so, and see how it shifts when you come off.
I have found on mine it is stuck in third gear for a second or two. I have seen similiar posts about this.
    Good luck
    Brad.
