Squeaky sound when steering at very low speed S40-V40

Happened since a few weeks ago... Under very low speed only (e.g. steer into and back out of parking spot), I can hear some squeaky sound at the steering wheel area. The power steering fluid is at healthy level and I just went through the 50000-km maintenance in August.

I will take it to dealership. However if anyone can provide some ideas on what this problem might be, I can have feeling on what to fix and how big the job might be...

Squeaky sound when steering at very low speed S40-V40

On my old 440 there were two screws on the back of the steering wheel that could only be accesed when the wheel was at 90 degrees from centre. when one of these screws worked loose it caused a distinct squeek. I was shown this by a Volvo mechanic.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks for the advice! S40-V40 2001

Thanks everyone. It seems like a lubrication job rather than parts replacement. I have a much better grasp on this problem now!

There's a dealer only TNN (TSB) on this and the solution is to first try injecting a special type grease inside the seal with a small hypodermic needle (no kidding!) and if that doesn't work, the PS rack needs replacing.
I've had good luck injecting the grease so I've not yet needed to replace a steering rack for that noise.
Only a dealer has access to that info with the Volvo approved method.

Could it be Steering Stops? S40-V40

My experience is ltd. to 850's, but if S40's also have "Steering Stops," you may be hearing sounds from them. (Volvospeed refers to the sound as a "Creeking.")

Lubricating them is no more difficult than checking oil--just requires you to get down on your back. The car doesn't even have to be jacked up, and the only required "part" is some thick grease (available at Kmart, etc).

Check the rubber boot around the steering wheel column at your floorboard. My solution has been to put some grease where the rubber and metal meet.
