Technical Service Bulletin on cams getting dirty S60 2001

According to my dealership there is a bulletin for the S60 MY01 about the cams getting dirty.

Does anybody know more details about the bulletin and/or what the symptons could be?

According to the dealership it might cause pinging. And.. I'm allergic to pinging... (seen the history of my car).

They claened the cams (they were dirty). So I gave it a try. And indeed in 2nd gear full throttle I can hear some "zzz", "zzz" at about 4000 rpm (never tried before that way). Now of course I don't know if this has anything to do with the "polluted cam problem" (it should be clean know) or if this is normal (I used RON 95).

Anybody can help me out?

Regards,

Dutch

Technical Service Bulletin on cams getting dirty? S60 2001

I work at a dealer, have access to all TSBs and have never seen anything about that to date. Can they give you a TNN #?
HOW are "the cams getting dirty"? I do know that lack of maintenance, few oil changes WILL cause problems. There are some problems with lease returned cars where the previous owner rarely changed oil.

Frank, I have no details about the TSB. Dealer just mentioned it, because I had pinging problems in the beginning. Can that has to do with valve timing and/or valve adjustment in the S60 2.4?

They cleaned the cams, which were indeed dirty. They also explained that with synthetic oil (which I started to use after 20k kms), pollution will be less.

No offense meant towards you but I double checked TSBs today and no such info (AS LISTED here) exists.
There's also no easy way to "clean cams" and I highly doubt that's really what was done. I think that it's more likely that you met a creative service writer who made up a story.
Well, hopefully they fixed your car?

They mentioned something like claening with brake cleaner. I will try to find out later at the dealership.

Don't know if the problem I have - if it is a problem - (some pinging at full throttle in 2nd gear at about 4000-5000 rpm) has anything to do with it.

          Thanks again,

          regards,

          Dutch

Removing "cams" on any newer Volvo engine is no easy thing, it's a fairly major and time consuming job and no one would do or recommend that.
Perhaps they meant "hydraulic cam adjusters" (not the correct part name btw), the oil fed devices that slightly adjust cam timing? IF a person fails to keep oil changed often enough (and NO, 7,500 mile oil changes doesn't cut it IMHO), then those devices can and will clog with gunk and effect operation and cause a check engine light with fault codes. It's become a problem with lease return used cars where the people who lease usually don't do much, if any maintenance.
