Air pump noise on cold days? S70

Occasionaly, just after startup there is a obvious noise which sounds
almost like a turbo spinning up. I am pretty sure it the secondary air pump
coming on as it happens briefly right after start up on cold days. Odd that it
only is noisey when it is fairly cold out. No codes throwing yet. Anyway,
has anyone else noticed this.. if so did it lead to the airpump failing.. or???

Thanks!

Air pump noise on cold days? V70-XC70 1998

Hi, I and others posted a lot on this. THe Air pump has a really small motor that when it gets wet will fail/seize. This and the Vol_speed site has a lot of helpfull info about this. This is just a typical under-designed system to make the greenies happy!

Air pump noise on cold days? S70

whining noise on cold morning start-ups is normal and is described in the owner's manual..
This whining noise is the air pump injecting air into the exhaust for faster warmup, to reduce emmissions. However, this noise only lasts less than a minute.
Persistent grumbling noise all the time, is the pump beginning to fail.

Air pump noise on cold days? V70-XC70 1998

HI, On very cold mornings here in the NE mine will sound too but not bad. I replaced my failed air pump last March. If your'e talking "very" cold mornings (those that would couse Ice formation) -maybe yours' has ice forming with the collected water/condensation in this pump?) I drilled some very small 3/32" holes at the bottom (plastic impeller case)to drain any moisture that usually gets there thru poor design of this system. We'll see how long it lasts now? D~
