Tailgate latch not working properly 850 1997

Can anyone help with this problem?
The tailgate on my 850 wagon won't latch completely in the down position. It will latch to the " first" position but is still loose. I looked at the latch mechanism in the door and it seems ok, will work when I move it w/ my fingers. Releases ok w/ the handle. The striker looks ok-no signs of movement or damage. Has anyone else had this problem?

    I just got the same issue. My repair shop said replace the lock ($150) plus 3/4 hour of labor. I'm going to try and find a lock somewhere else . . .

      I found that the "j" latch was a little bit smashed as if the latch were in the closed position once when being shut. I resolved the issue by moving the strike plate back slightly. Works fine now.

    take a screwdriver and move the hook on the latch that engages the base. It resembles a "J" and can be moved while depressing the tailgate handle.
