odometer/tripmeter 850 1996

I just got back from a 480 mile trip to Oklahoma City and the next day noticed that the odometer and tripmete stopped working. Everything else is working such as the speedometer, gpm, miles left etc. Everything was working fine until starting it up and driving off. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks
Joe V

This is a common problem. You can get the replacement gear ($25 plus S+H)at:

http://www.odometergears.com/

The instructions for removing the instrument cluster can be found at Bay 13:

http://www.volvospeed.com/volvo_performance.php

Once the instrument cluster is out, you will need a jeweler's philips screwdriver to remove the various layers until you reach the odometer tripmeter. The whole thing is pretty easy and takes less than 2 hours. Hint: Don't forget to reconnect the small wire from the odometer to the cluster when you reassemble it.

Good Luck

is it a 12 point, I have been on the web site and they suggest removing the gear first. I hate to take the dash apart and leave it for a couple days or weeks.

I felt the same way. I decided to risk the $30 and not take the dash apart until I had the gear in hand. My mechanic said that I would have to leave the car in the shop for 10 days while he sent the unit off to be repaired. I decided that I would take the chance. I just selected the one that he had listed for the Volvo 850. That is a 12 tooth gear.

okay now I'm really confused, I got an email from the gear guy and he suggested the 15 tooth gear. You mention the 12 tooth. He mentions a 12 tooth pod that only breaks about 2% of the time. Is it the 12 or the 15 that breaks?

I never counted the teeth. I just clicked on the gear that said Volvo 850 and installed what he sent. Don't know what else to tell you. Sorry for the confusion.

If in doubt, buy both and send the one back you don't need. Hint: Make sure the guy you buy it from is cool with this first

I just bought the odometer gear form the odometergears.com guy, It is a 15 tooth gear, His web site is confusing because it shows a 12 tooth pod, but that is what is behind the gear in the photo, not the gear itself. I have not yet installed the gear but I feel it is the correct part.
