More problems...transmission?? C70 1999

I was at a red light this morning and when it turned green, my car couldn't move. I tried putting it in reverse and it wouldn't move either. Basically, all the gears (R, D, 3, 2) didn't work. Finally I got it off the road by pressing the "W" (Winter/Wet) mode and the car drove.

In "W" mode, only the "D" gear worked. "R, 3, 2" didn't work. I've already dropped the car off at my local mechanic guy and he's gonna take a look at it. Off-hand, he says it's the transmission, but is not sure until he takes a closer look at it.

If it is indeed a broken tranny...how much am I looking at?? for part? for labor?...how much is dealer??

Thanks!

Was the Arrow on the speedo cluster flashing?
If it was, then most likely it's the PNP switch that's bad, not the tranny.
Try cleaning electronic contacts in the PNP by moving the gear selector handle fast 10-15 times from P to 2(with engine off). This will buy you some time but eventually it needs to be replaced. About $250 at the dealer.
Also, if tranny fluid has not been flushed, this is a good time to do it.

The "Arrow" on the speedometer cluster never flashed. I had tried the P to 2 technique when the car was not moving this morning, but it didn't work.

The mechanic called me back and gave me a quote of $1500 for a rebuilt/used transmission with labor & taxes. I had called a Volvo dealer earlier in the day and they quoted me $2000 for the transmission & $1000+ for labor.

I'd have a volvo dealer look at it and mention you think it is the
PNP switch and ask them too look closely at that. More then one
transmsission has been replaced when it was the PNP switch. The
dealer will be more familier with the specific issues here.

Also, any codes pulled? The transmission will record error codes.
An OBD-II reader should get them.

Did the engine rev when it would not move? I'm thinking maybe
        a problem with the electronic throttle? (I think a 99 C70 has
the electronic throttle -- not sure since they did not seem to
follow all the engine changes the 70 series had about that time.)

          Ray,

There was no codes pulled off with the OBD-II reader.

The engine did rev when I hit the accelerator, but didn't move. Another thing the mechanic noticed was that when the car was put in "Neutral" mode and you tried to push the car back...it wouldn't bulge. This would explain why reverse doesn't work in regular or winter mode.
