1994 850 Turbo Wagon Oil Smell 850 1994

I just purchased a 1994 850 Turbo Wagon. I really like the car but I do not think I will ever get to drive it since my wife likes it too.

I am concerned about an oil burning smell that I cannot locate. The car does not drip any oil or smoke from the engine compartment so it is very buffudleing.

I was told that the oil return tude from the turbo can leak but I do not know which hose that is.

Any help would be appreciated

another thing to check is oil filler cap gasket. these have a tendency to go bad and let small amounts of oil to leak out. the oil then gets blown under the cover that covers the spark plugs. it will pool up in here and just slowly cook. ipd sells replacement gaskets for a few $'s that fit all volvo models.

Very common. It took $10 in parts (O-ring and gasket), a long allen wrench, a socket wrench and 45 minutes. A local Volvo shop wanted $200 for the job. Here's a link to Bay13 for procedures and pix.

I only needed the socket and ratchet because a turbo oil line was just blocking me getting the oil return pipe out once the allen bolts were removed. May not be a problem for you but I just loosened the oil line banjo bolt, rotated the fitting out of the way and tightened it up again.

With the car up on ramps it's very easy to get to.

    Good luck,

Could be that or as simple as the oil dip stick gasket cracked. Pull the dip stick out and check to see if the gasket is in good shape too. If it isn't go to Autozone and buy the little box with the small rubber gaskets...replace the one on your dipstick with two (that's right, 2) of the smallest gaskets. You'll have a time getting them around the dipstick but once they're in place they will last for several years, and the dipstick will be snug.
