My brand new volvo rear brakes squeeeeek (loudly) 850 1997

I just got these installed and had to return to the guy that installed them because they squeak very loudly when I am slowing to a stop (gentle brake pressure). He buffed them up, which did absolutely nothing. The guy doesn't seem to know what to do. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Hailie

Your best bet is to use Volvo pads and Volvo shims. Brake grease
should also be used. This page has extensive instructions on how
to do the job. Following these steps will reduce the chances of
noise. Note that even OEM pads can squeek. My rear ones did after
about 60K miles on them. I removed the parts and re-greased the shims.

      Good advice. 850 1997

      Ray,

I read your post about re-greasing the rear pads, shims, etc.

It took me about 45 minutes from start to putting the tools away. The squeal is gone!

      Thanks,
      Bryan

I just happen to have the teflon shims that IPD sells. I have sold my 850 so am no longer in need of them. Check them out at http://www.ipdusa.com/ProductsCat.aspx?CategoryID=350&NodeID=114&RootID=629then email me if you want them. I'll let them go for $5.00 for the set (IPD charges $7.50 plus shipping) plus shipping if you want. You need to get your brake installer to take the pads back out, use these shims, using brake grease on both sides of the shims and back sides of the pads...the shims go against the caliper piston. This will stop the squeeking. By the way, someone on here claimed that the squeeking goes away after awhile. I had the opposite happen. At first they didn't squeek, but as the brakes wore, the squeek came...just as you described...with light braking at the end of a stop. I bought the shims for when I was going to change the pads, but sold the car before I had a chance to use them. Anyway, good luck!!

i had the same problem when i put new pads on my breaks, as long as you got the rotors turned and if they beveled down the edges of your pads it should go away after a while, mine did it for a month or two and it got really annoying but it just went away after the breaks got broken in, my gues would be there are still little grooves in your rotors and they are just catching on the pad, but dont worry that is nothing wrong with them just means they make noise for a little bit. i have the 96 850 t5 but there isnt muich difference at all between the years, so hopefully yours will stop soon....

As a heads up kinda thing, many people reccomend not "turning" the volvo rotors.

it seems to cause more problems than it has the potential to fix.
