Checking Engine light and Service light 850 1994

My 1994 850 Automatic has had the Service light on for a number of years. A mechanic told me that it had nothing to do with engine mechanics but as an indicator for an oil change. So I let it stay on. The drivability hasn't suffered.

Recently the Check Engine light is on. Now I am more concerned.

The car has 158,000 miles on it and runs very well. At 60,000 miles, the drive belt was replaced. At 80,000 miles the inline filter was put in. At 90,000 miles, the timing belt was replaced. Spark plugs were replaced at 40,000 mile intervals. Other routine maintenance items have been done on schedules.

How do I turn off the Check Engine light and the Service light?

Thanks.

Kinderknight

Checking Engine light and Service light 850 1994

Does your 94 have the service "junction box" located behind the right head light in the engine compartment? I know my 95 850 does, and it can be used to reset the service light as well as the check engine light, and read codes as well. IPD or volvospeed.com has the procedure.

I think 1996 and on stopped that box, and you need a plug in OBD2 thingy to reset the light, and a scanner to read codes and clear check engine.

Just because the check engine light is on does not mean the engine is about to detonate into a million pieces. It could be a loose gas cap, or a knock sensor, or many other things. It is important to track down the code, though. I would invest in the VOlvo pocket data booklet, which has the listings of all the 3 digit codes. Its about 15 bucks and very helpful.

Read the codes for the Check Engine light and the service light and turn them off! Go here for the info
      http://kinovolvo.cjb.net/
And look under Useful Information...it's all there. I printed these pages out and kept them in the glove box until I sold my '94 850.
Make sure you practice the "button pushing sequence," as you have to do them quickly and without mistake. If you end up with some "check engine codes," list them here (it's the number of times the lights blink in sequence, with a pause between the 3 digit numbers) and we'll try to help you identify what the problem is, if any. Guess that's about all.
